Selling randomized draws rather than items, and the structures that make the real price hard to see.
Gacha monetization sells randomized draws from a pool of rewards rather than selling the rewards directly. The name comes from Japanese capsule-toy machines; the model reached scale in mobile games around 2010 and spread outward as the Western "loot box".
Four structures do the work. Published pull rates state the probability of each rarity tier, typically near one percent at the top — a range where a fraction of a Percentage Point compounds into a large difference in expected spend. Pity and spark counters guarantee a top-tier result after a fixed number of failures, converting an unbounded loss into a bounded one; a player who cannot price a probability can price a ceiling, and the ceiling becomes the target. Duplicate-to-power ladders keep an item valuable after it is obtained, so the pool never saturates — the same treadmill a Creature Collector roster runs on, though there it is usually built by encounter rate and skill rather than by a purchasable pull. Multi-currency economies put two or three conversions between money and a draw, in bundles that never divide evenly into a draw's cost, so pricing an outcome takes deliberate Fermi Estimation rather than reading a label.
The draw itself is ordinary Seeded Randomness resolved on a server; the effort goes into presentation. A long reveal, a rarity flash and a near-miss framing are tuned with the craft of Game Feel. Limited-time banners supply an Anchoring Effect against which smaller purchases read as restraint, and the escalating relief of a guaranteed pull follows Opponent Process Theory. Where revenue per player becomes the design metric, Goodhart's Law applies with force.
Disclosure rules followed. Japan banned "complete gacha" in 2012 under prize-labelling law; China has required published probabilities since 2017; Belgium's regulator treated paid loot boxes as gambling in 2018; South Korea mandated rate disclosure in 2024. Enforcement varies, and disclosure in Plain Language remains rarer than disclosure as such.
