Idle Game
A genre in which progress continues while the player is absent, built on exponential curves the player learns to read.
Idle game — also incremental or clicker game — describes a form in which the primary resource accrues on a timer rather than in response to input. The player's actions set a rate and then step away; the game continues without them. Cookie Clicker established the shape, and the genre now spans everything from deliberately absurd number-inflation exercises to quiet aquarium simulations that ask for a few minutes a day.
The genre's real subject is exponential growth. Costs and yields both scale multiplicatively, so a number that took an hour to reach becomes rounding error within a session, and the player's actual skill is reading rate-of-change rather than magnitude. Choosing between an upgrade that doubles output and one that halves cost is a comparison of exponents, and players who have never met Big-O Notation develop a working intuition for why one curve eventually swallows the other. The interesting decisions cluster where the curves cross; the intervals between are deliberately empty.
Prestige is the structural answer to an exponent that has outrun its own interface. The player resets to zero in exchange for a permanent multiplier, and the reset is the reward — a bounded, voluntary Meta-Progression loop that recovers the meaningful decision density of the early game while carrying forward everything learned. Offline accrual makes the absence itself productive, which is the genre's defining inversion: a Cron job the player is emotionally invested in, or a Daemon with a progress bar.
The form sits uncomfortably close to its own critique. A game engineered so that returning is always mildly rewarding and never demanding is optimising for the return visit, and the distance between that and the intermittent-reinforcement patterns described under Physical Dependence is a design choice rather than a category difference. The honest end of the genre keeps sessions short, makes the curve legible, and lets the player see the whole shape; the extractive end obscures the curve and sells positions on it, at which point it is Gacha Monetization with a different skin. Judging which is which is easier than it sounds: ask whether the game is trying to be finished.
