Visual Novel is a narrative form told through static or lightly animated character portraits and blocks of text over a background image, where play consists mostly of reading and choosing between branches. The form's vocabulary is Japanese: Chunsoft's 1990s "sound novels" — Otogirisō (1992) and Kamaitachi no Yoru (1994) — set the template of text as the primary medium, where the "sound" meant music and stereo effects rather than voice acting. Both were unvoiced, and Kamaitachi drew its cast as featureless silhouettes instead of portraits. Two presentation modes are usually distinguished, only one of them descended from those novels: NVL format fills the screen with prose and lets the art recede behind it, closer to a printed page, and is the sound novel's direct heir; ADV format, a persistent text box across the screen's bottom with a portrait above it, predates them by roughly a decade and is already in place in Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken (1983).

Branching is managed through flags — hidden variables set by choices and read later to gate content. A route can be locked until an earlier is cleared, and a true ending often needs flags from several playthroughs satisfied at once, the same Constraint Propagation problem a Metroidvania's ability gates pose, worked in narrative variables instead of map edges. This is where the form parts ways with a Computer Role-Playing Game: its branches are authored and finite, not generated from a state the player can perturb freely.

The genre's identity sits in UI and pacing, not simulation. Danganronpa's trial sequences and Ace Attorney's cross-examinations dress a largely linear core in rhythm and text-as-spectacle rather than systemic depth, though both draw real structure from the Fair-Play Mystery tradition of clues shown before the reveal. Because text carries nearly the whole product, Video Game Localization and Spoiler Etiquette matter more here than in most genres, and completionists Datamining flag conditions for a true ending treat full-route Achievement Hunting as a puzzle in the game's own logic.
