Quick Time Event
A context-sensitive prompt during a scripted sequence that trades a game's normal moveset for one correctly-timed input.
Quick Time Event is a moment, usually inside a cutscene or a heavily scripted set piece, where the game pauses its normal moveset and asks for one specific, time-limited input — press a button, tap a direction, match a prompt — with success or failure branching the outcome. Shenmue is generally credited with the modern template; Resident Evil 4 and God of War made the on-screen button prompt itself a genre signature, to the point that "press X to not die" became shorthand for the mechanic's most cynical use.
The design case for QTEs is that they let a high-fidelity, entirely pre-animated sequence keep the player's hands involved at all, rather than turning a boss's death animation or a dramatic escape into a passive cutscene. The design case against them is that the input rarely resembles the fiction it's dressed as — mashing a button to "resist" something has no mechanical relationship to resisting anything, which makes a failed QTE feel arbitrary rather than earned, closer to Soulslike design's inverse: an unreadable, unrepeatable failure that teaches the player nothing about what to do differently.
Heavy Rain pushed the form toward near-invisibility, weaving prompts into ordinary actions until the QTE barely announced itself as one; that version reads far better than the blatant on-screen-prompt style precisely because it hides the seam between "game" and "cutscene" the original template left exposed.
QTEs are worth distinguishing from Skill Check: a skill check is usually a mechanic embedded in ongoing systemic play (a dialogue roll, a lockpick minigame) that the player can approach with build or preparation, while a QTE is a one-off interruption of a scripted sequence with no preparation possible beyond quick reflexes in the moment.
