Auto Battler
A genre that moves skill from real-time execution to pre-round drafting, since the battle itself resolves without player input.
Auto Battler describes a genre in which the player assembles a roster during a shopping-and-positioning phase, then watches combat resolve autonomously once the round starts — no targeting, no timing, no input during the fight itself. The skill test is entirely in composition: which units to buy, which to bench, where to stand them, and when to commit gold to leveling up rather than rerolling the shop.
The genre traces to a Dota 2 custom map, Dota Auto Chess, whose success spawned standalone competitors within months — Teamfight Tactics is the most durable of them, and it made the genre's real strategic layer explicit: an economy game (gold banked now compounds into interest later) layered under a synergy game (units of the same trait unlock a shared bonus at a threshold), so the draft is really two optimization problems running at once.
It's easy to lump auto battlers in with Tower Defense since both hand combat resolution to the system, but the boards aren't alike — a tower defense board is asymmetric with a fixed attacker path, while an auto battler's board is symmetric, and the strategy lives in unit synergy rather than lane geometry. It sits closer to Deckbuilder in spirit: both are about curating a pool (a deck, a roster) that plays itself out correctly once assembled, rather than about moment-to-moment execution.
The shop's randomized unit pool is a Variable-Ratio Reinforcement engine wearing a strategy game's clothes, and several entries in the genre have added an explicit Pity Timer on rare-unit odds — a tell that the designers know exactly how much of the genre's pull is a slot machine with extra steps, and have chosen to blunt the worst of it rather than lean in.
