Second-System Effect is the tendency for the follow-up to a successful, constrained system to become bloated, because the team building it has for the first time earned the credibility and the budget to fix everything they wished they could have done the first time. Fred Brooks named it in The Mythical Man-Month, watching engineers who'd shipped something lean under real constraints turn around and design a sprawling second version with every feature they'd been forced to cut.

The mechanism is almost noble, which is what makes it dangerous: the first system was built under real pressure — deadlines, unknowns, a team that didn't yet trust its own judgment — and those constraints acted as forced discipline. The second system is built by the same team, now confident and often with more resources, and with no constraint forcing them to say no to anything. Every "we should have done X" from the first version gets added, and the additions don't cancel out — they compound, because nobody is playing the role the deadline used to play.

The pattern generalizes past software: a sequel movie with a bigger budget and no clear vision, a home renovation that adds a feature for every room instead of solving the actual complaint. In codebases it shows up as a "v2" rewrite that ships a plugin architecture, three configuration layers, and an abstraction for a use case that has exactly one caller — see Feature Creep and speculative generality more broadly. The successor to a lean tool is where Gall's Law gets violated hardest, because the team feels license to design the complex system directly rather than growing it from something that already worked.

The defense isn't refusing improvements — it's keeping the same discipline that made the first system good: a real constraint, deliberately imposed, and a bias toward cutting scope rather than adding it just because you finally can.
