Inertial Frame of Reference
A coordinate system in which an undisturbed body moves at constant velocity, and none is privileged.
An inertial frame of reference is a coordinate system in which a body free of external force moves in a straight line at constant speed. Galileo's insight, which Newton took as a starting point, is that the laws of motion look identical in every such frame: no experiment inside a sealed cabin can distinguish rest from steady travel at 300 km/h. Velocity is meaningful only relative to a chosen frame, and no frame is the true one. Absolute rest is not merely unknown but unmeasurable, a claim that fails Falsifiability outright.
The everyday consequence is that objects share the motion of whatever carries them. A ball released inside a moving train keeps the train's horizontal velocity and lands where it would if the train were still: ball, air and observer move together.
Leaving the co-moving air mass changes things. Outside the vehicle a body still travels at the vehicle's velocity, but now through air fixed to the ground, and drag acts on that relative velocity. It does not fly backwards; it decelerates. The same reasoning governs a cyclist or a sailboat, where what matters is apparent wind — the vector sum of true wind and velocity of travel — rather than any sense of moving backwards over the ground. Apparent wind is why a headwind grows with speed in still air, and why the aerodynamic budget dwarfs Rolling Resistance at pace.
Acceleration breaks the symmetry. A frame that speeds up, brakes or turns is non-inertial, and inside it motion appears to need extra forces — centrifugal, Coriolis — that are artefacts of the frame rather than interactions. Treating them as physical pushes is a durable Plausible Mechanism error; the Ground Truth is the choice of frame.
